The Western Conference Playoffs have been suprisingly less competitive than the Eastern conference. The West is generally regarded as the tougher conference, yet including the two series that are finished, only one is headed for more than 5 games. I still regard the west as the better conference, but it makes you wonder? I think that the east has as many Championship contenders as the west! LA is the favorite with Cleveland right behind, then theres Boston with Orlando and Denver behind them.

     1)LA vs 8) Utah          Lakers win 4-1

Despite what a lot of people thought, Utah did not provide much of a challenge to the Lakers in the first round. They struggled with injuries the whole year, and even though their talent when healthy suggests they should have been a team to be reckoned with, the Lakers are just to good! The deepest and best offensive team in basketball, the Lakers didnt even appear to play their best basketball. I attribute this to the fact that they are waiting on the Finals! They don't feel they have anything to prove, they beat Cleveland twice this year without Bynum, and in my opinion will again with him in the NBA Finals!

       4)Portland vs 5) Houston        Houston leads 3-2

This is an example of experience, and chemistry being so important in basketball. Houston comes into this series not having won a first round series in who knows when? Theyre playing without it's most talented player(Tracy McGrady), against a younger, more talented Portland team without homecourt, and they are up 3-2. I truly believe Portland in their first playoff experience for most of these players, if they could get past this series would only gain more confidence and be tough to beat as they move through these playoffs. Ultimately the winner of this series gets the Lakers, and Portland despite their success against the Lakers in the regular season, don't possess the playoff metal. The Rockets simply don't have the fire power to handle the Lakers. Prediction Portland is a year away from being serious playoff contender. Houston despite their lack of sizzle plays good enough defense along with their late game execution to win series in 6.

      2) Denver vs 7) New Orleans     Denver wins series 4-1

Even though this was a 2 vs 7, I thought this would be one of the more closely contested series. It turned out to be the most lopsided 7 game series in NBA history, Denver beating NO by an average of 24 ppg. NO struggled with injuries during the regular season much like Utah, which it seems never allowed them to find their stride. They performed pitifully, losing a game in the series by another NBA record 58 pts. With the success they had last year, and MVP candidate Chris Paul, I truly did not expect it. Denver on the other hand has been tremendous since the Billups for Iverson trade, playing defense, sharing the ball, showing toughness! All things you need to be successful in the playoffs. Players like Kenyon martin provide the toughness, role players like Birdman, and Donte Jones bring the intangibles, with the star power of Mello and Billups. Denver actually has a favorable match up against Dallas who I do think they will get by. Ultimately the Lakers await, and they will not get pass them, but hats off to George Karl and Denver for finally making it out of the first round!

        3) San Antonio vs 6) Dallas         Dallas wins series 4-1

Not really a surprising outcome to the series considering Ginobilli did not play in it, Dallas actually is a talented veteran, healthy team who was playing really well coming into the playoffs. Basically the Spurs are nearing the end of a championship run, and to much age and injuries to overcome! Dallas still has Dirk Nowitski who in my opinion is still one of the 5 best players in the league. They still have Jason Kidd, who even though hes not as good as he once was, is experienced, and capable of playing with anybody for a series. Throw in 6th man Jason Terry and Josh Howard, and they are capable of beating Denver, and seeing the Lakers in the finals. Rick Carlisle is a good coach, who has them prepared and focused, it's just a matter of will with Dallas. How bad do they want it?  They threw away an NBA Championship against the Heat 3 years ago, and have been pouting ever since. If they are motivated don't be surprised if Dallas makes a serious run at the end of these playoffs.

The start of this year's NBA Playoffs has gotten off to a great start! My biggest complaint with them, is that in the first round the league spreads the games out too much. Of course this is in an effort to allow us to see all the games, without conflict of the other games that are being played. It has it's advantages, because in the first round you basically have two games on every night. For a basketball junky you cant beat this, but the continuity of basketball is broken up. For example Cleveland who swept their first round series against Detroit, now has to wait as long as a week and a half if Miami and Atlanta, their potential second round opponent's series goes seven games. Enough of that lets talk basketball.

      Eastern Conference

     1)Cleveland vs 8) Detroit       Cle wins 4-0

Cleveland and Detroit went about as expected, the Cavs played like a team that won 66 games during the regular season, and had the best record in the league. The Pistons on the other hand played like a team that from the time they traded Chauncey Billups, has backslided their way into the playoffs only to barely make it, and mail in the the series. It is amazing because just two years ago, the Cavs were the underdog against the number one seeded  Pistons. Cleveland looks like a team on a mission and I don't see anything short of Kevin Garnett being 100% stopping them from a date in the finals.

     4)Atlanta vs 5) Miami             Series tied 2-2

This has been a series of blowouts, with the exception of game 4. Just when I thought Miami would take control of the series, Dwade now seems to be hurt! If this is the case the Heat are done. I tell you though, his play, and it's effect on his team's performance makes a compelling argument for how valuable he was this season. Atlanta must make this an uptempo game, and use their athleticism, and size to wear the Heat down if they are to win this series. Assuming Dwade is healthy, the Heat must limit the number of possessions during the game, and Wade has to be great. Prediction Wade looked like he is hurt, and Atlanta has the better overall team, and home court. Atlanta in 7.

       3)Orlando vs 6) Philadelphia    Orlando leads 3-2

This is a series where Orlando has clearly been the better team. they have blown two double digit second half leads, as well as losing two games on last second shots! They don't seem to be very poised or comfortable at the end of games. It kind of makes you think back to when Shaq and Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy had a war of words, and Shaq said Van Gundy was a master of panic! Well Orlando could still be headed for a seventh game, because at this writing Orlando is awaiting word from the league as to whether Dwight Howard will be suspended for an elbow he delivered in game 5. They also will be without Courtney Lee their first year guard, who has been their second best player this series, because of a sinus fracture. Prediction if Howard is suspended  and he will be (Remember Amare Stoudamaire was suspended from an important Pho/San series just in case you think he will get special treatment!) Orlando in 7.

         2)Boston vs 7)Chicago             Boston leads 3-2

This has easily been the best series of the First Round! Three overtime games in one series, which is an NBA record by the way. Boston should consider itself lucky, because Chicago has actually outplayed them to this point. The bottom line however is wins, and Chicago's inability to execute down the stretch is going to cost them this series. I do think Chicago can force a game 7 much like Atlanta did to the Celtics last year, only to lose. Paul Pierce finally  stepped up last night down the stretch, and Rajon Rondo has arguably been the best performer in the playoffs so far, nearly averaging a triple double. Bottom line Celtic's defense and championship experience will be to much for Chicago , and it's rookie head coach, and point guard. Prediction Boston in 7.

Their were to controversial plays last night in the Orl/Phi game and the Bos/Chi game. In the Boston game Rajon Rondo committed what should have been called a flagrant foul. Now I know 15 years ago we would have laughed it off, but the rules have changed since then. He did not make a play on the ball, since Brad Miller had the ball extended above his head and 4 feet in front of him. He also hit him in the head, which constitutes a blow to the head. Forget intent because that is not part of the rule. I know the refs don't want to be the reason a game was decided. Yet they still were because Chicago would have had two free throws, plus the ball out of bounds, possibly making it a tie game with a chance for a last second win. In the Orlando game Dwight Howard intentionally hit Samuel Dalembart in the back of the head. He should have been ejected from the game, but he was only given a technical foul. The reason for this, is Dwight Howard is not perceived to be a dirty player, and was given the benefit of the doubt. Had this been a player such as Ron Artest, Raja Bell, or James Posey, they would have been ejected on the spot. The sad part about this is that Howard will be suspended, essentially balancing out the mistake during the game. Rondo won't be suspended but that incorrect call very well could have cost them the game!

In repsonse to my NBA Regular Season Awards posted last week, I knew there would be some disagreement over leaving Kobe Bryant off of the All NBA First Team. Now I have to explain to you why  he was not on the First Team! The All NBA Team is an individual award as is the MVP award, however  it should not reflect on what the individual's team does. MVP is the most important player on any given team, whose contributions allow great success for him as well as his teamates! The All NBA Team is meant to be an individual award  that is given to a player based on his individual achievments  therefore limiting, or excluding any team accomplishiments .

Reason  1 better numbers! Dwayne Wade and Chris Paul had better numbers than Kobe Bryant:

Dwade 30.2ppg 7.5apg  5.0rpg49.1 %    Led league in Scoring

Kobe 26.8ppg 5.0apg 5.2rpg 46%

CP3  23.0ppg 11apg 5.5rpg 51%             Led league in Assists and Steals

Second reason You can't use a guys career reputation as a reason, to vote for him! yes Kobe Bryant is probably one of the Ten Best Players to ever play the game, but the All NBA Team should be based on a yearly basis, it is not a career achievment award. To suggest that Chris Paul wait in some imaginary line of succession before supplanting a yearly mainstay at his position is ridiculous!

The reason were discussing Chris Paul is because, most of you feel he is the least  deserving, besides I find it even harder to place Kobe on the first team over Dwayne Wade who was clearly better this year at the same position 2 Guard. One argument I hear is how can you leave Kobe off of the first team when he is third in the MVP voting? Well I actually didn't list  a third place finisher, but assuming he was third I go back to the fact that they are awards of a different distinction. No one would suggest Alan Iverson was an All Star this season, but not only was he an All Star, he actually started the game, now we all know this is based on fan voting. The point is he was voted on because of his popularity, reputation, and belief by some that in the right system he is still an elite player. Well this is similar to what's going on here with Kobe. It is assumed that he is the better player based on reputation, a reputation that based on last year's NBA Finals should have taken a hit to anyone watching. One of the things that's supposed to seperate Kobe from everyone else is his ability to take over games at the end if it's close and dominate leading to victory! Well he tried and was routinely handled against Boston sometimes not even able to get off a shot. His inabilty to defend Paul Pierce in the post was glaring, and he arguably was the third best player on the court (Pierce and Garnett). His over reliance on his jump shot and questionable ability to motivate his team  and make weaker players better? well these are all knocks! Finally it is also assumed that the reason his numbers aren't as good is because his team is better. Well that's probably true,  but who's to say that if Paul or Wade ,they at different stages of their career  couldn't equal or better Kobe's numbers if they were on the Lakers? Ultimately there is a lot of supposition, but what is not is the numbers, which is why I will go with My above stated criteria and take both Paul and Wade over Kobe on the First Team.

* I stated in error that Lebron and Dwade were only  players to finish in top 10 in Scoring and Assists, well so did Chris Paul first in assists and 9th in scoring.

Wednesday 15 april 2009 3 15 /04 /Apr /2009 22:23

Once again after a long season, it is time to give out those much anticipated, and very much debated NBA Regular Season Awards. Just a little bit of background: The categories are Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, and MVP. We will name a 6th Man of the Year, but since I regard this as a Bogus Award we will not discuss it! I'll save that for another time. We will also as a treat list our All NBA 1st and 2nd Teams, and remember all accolades are based on the regular season!

Rookie of the Year

Runner up: OJ Mayo had a nice rookie season, he led all rookies in scoring at 18.4ppg, he was second on his team in scoring and assists, and even on a team that was 23-58 thats pretty good for a rookie. He was supposed to be this selfish me first bad guy in the locker room who didn't play defense. He in fact didn't miss a game this season, was the teams best perimeter defender, and was praised by his coaches for his effort and leadership. He also shared the ball, and shot a respectable 44% from the field for an NBA shooting guard. Add that to his tremendous skills with the ball, very good athleticism, and scorers mentality, he looks like he will develop into a special player in future years.

Winner : Derrick Rose in a year where  there was no big difference in the numbers of the top candidates, he is the winner based largely in part to his teams (41-40) record at this writing. Pay attention this will be a theme later revisited. Rose averaged 16.8 ppg 6.3apg and 3.7 rpg while shooting 47% from the field, and while not staggering nunmbers or nescessarily even better than the ruuner-up Mayo's numbers, he proved to be the bigggest difference in a team that if they win tonight will be the 6th seed and 10 games better than a team that finished out of the playoffs and in the lottery last year! Point Guard is probably the toughest position to learn coming into the leauge, as you have to play your game and incoorperate everyone else's to make the team run smoothly. He played for a rookie head coach who was learning as well, and who's coaching performance was questionable at best! He missed only one game and his performance actulally peaked toward the end of the season as most rookies fall off! Most importantly he showed up night in and night out as the Bulls played meaningful games in the last 20 games of their season to secure a playoff berth. His physical tools are unquestioned, he is a superior athlete who makes explosive plays and is capable of dominating games when his jump shot improves. A future star in this league!

Coach of the Year

Runner up: Stan van Gundy comes off as a bit of a whiner, and I dont agree with all of his motivational tactics, such as continually pubically criticizing your best player, but he has done a great job. When you consider Orlando played the last half of the season 42 gms to be exact without Jameer Nelson their second best player, All-Star, who at the time of his injury was averaging 17ppg, 6 apg shooting 50% from the field 90% from the line and 45% from 3pt. A win tonight gives them 59 wins behind only Cleveland,Lakers, and Boston. If someone had asked you to bet even a car payment that Orlando would have 59 wins you would have taken that bet. Orlando also plays a fast paced entertaining style of basketball that much in the Phoenix style of play except they play defense too.  It's a young team that starts a rookie 3rd year player and a guy that didnt go to college, with no considerable depth to speak of. Usually the coach who wins this award is a guy who's team wins the most games or his team does more than what you thought with less! This year my top two fill both those categories, with apologies to Phil Jackson all he does is win a lot of games wherever he is.

Winner: Mike Brown first succesful offspring from the Greg Poppovich protegee's, his offensive strategy, and play calling are not very creative, and his substitution patterns and use of personnell can also be puzziling at times. However the defense that Cleveland plays 2nd in rebounding 3rd in field goal percentage, his likability with his players, the Cavs 39-2 home record second in NBA history and the overall best record in the NBA 66-16 is very impressive. I know he has arguably the best player in the game on his team, but before this season if someone asked you how many games the Cavs would win maybe you say 55 which is really good! But 66 keep in mind only 5 better win totals in NBA history, the coach has to get some of this credit. As good as Mo williams was this year, not considered universially an all star player, the ability to have your team come out and compete night in and night out we give Mike Jones the nod. this is not to say he is a championship coach, that is still to be determined, but definetly warrants a Coach of the year.

MVP

Runner Up  Dwayne Wade had an excellent year, very much deserving of MVP, led the league in scoring 30.2 ppg while shooting 49% from the field, 7.5 apg 9th in the league, second in the league in steals at 2.2spg. He led a team that started two rookies for much of the year  and a rookie head coach from the worst record in the league last year to a 5th seed in this years playoffs. He was easily the focus of every teams defense, routinely facing double teams and gimmick defenses designed to take the ball out of his hands. Even if you go back to the Olympics, he was arguably the best player on the floor at times with that group. So why is he not MVP, because ultimately his numbers are basically identical to our MVP's numbers and his team has 22 more wins. All of the top MVP candidates are invaluable to their teams. If you take any of them off of their teams Kobe, Lebron, Howard, Wade Paul, none of their teams would be as good! There has to be something to seperate them wins! Now it will be argued that Wade plays with a lesser cast, but that would be diminishing the other guys greatness. Wade is routinely applauded for having won a championship, and being finals MVP. Is it fair to him to say well he had Shaq on his team, and if one of the other top guys had him they could have won too! No you judge the result wich is he won with who he had. Well that's the same thing here, you have to judge the results and the results say that his numbers are identical except for wins. In order for Wade to have won this award his numbers would have to be significantly better to offset the number of wins and their not.

Winner  LeBron James has been building to this point since we first heard about him 8 years ago as a highschool sophmore. Arguably as hyped an indvidual as any in sports history, he impressively has lived up to the hype. Second in the league at  28.4 ppg shooting 49% from the field 7.2 apg ranking him 10th in the league, making him one of only 2 players (Wade being the other) to finish in the top 10 in scoring and assists, averaged 7.6 rpg giving him 5 straight seasons of 27ppg 6apg 6rpg only Oscar Robertson has done that, I could go on with the numbers, but that's not the extent of his greatness! He has this quality that you can just see by watching him with his teamates, guys love playing with him, he brings out the best in everybody around him. kind of like Magic. You begin to take him for granted as we do with many of  the great ones, we begin to regard their greatness as routine because they do it night in and night out year after year. Remember this guy has already been to the finals, because he put a team of average individuals on his back and carried them there. He only has one first round pick starting along side him, yet  Cleveland has 66 wins. Dwade may have been the most dynamic player this year, kobe may still be the guy who's hand you want the ball in at the end of the game, but if I'm at the park,  or an NBA All star practice and I have to pick a five he will be first!

6th Man Jason Terry - My beef with this award is it is given to a guy who comes off the bench, but really plays starters minutes.
